He created him Prince and wrote on the margin of the Commander-in-Chief’s report of the expedition, ‘Read with the greatest interest and with respect for the fine courage of my troops.’ No doubt it made splendid reading for the Autocrat sitting in his green-walled study overlooking the Fortress of Peter and Paul. He was always deeply interested in military matters. After all, this whole expedition into Daghestan had been, in the first place, his idea.
