So sang the soldiers and the village choirs; and all the people, for a century to come, remembering the disasters and bravery of Dargo. I have described the expedition in some detail, for it was typical of many, many years of Caucasian ,warfare: heartbreaking, indecisive, wanton, heroic.

The Tzar, loyally supporting the man of his choice, decided that Voronzov’s escape constituted a major victory. He created him Prince and wrote on the margin of the Commander-in-Chief’s report of the expedition, ‘Read with the greatest interest and with respect for the fine courage of my troops.’ No doubt it made splendid reading for the Autocrat sitting in his green-walled study overlooking the Fortress of Peter and Paul. He was always deeply interested in military matters. After all, this whole expedition into Daghestan had been, in the first place, his idea.
