A CARPENTER FROM CHICAGO
Across the road from the cottage where Gargano and the others stayed lived a man and his wife from Chicago. He was Henry Borgen, a seventy-two-year-old carpenter who resided there year round. He and his wife had moved there eleven years ago, after he retired as a carpenter. He knew the Fish Lake residents very well. Things were a little more complicated during the summers, when visitors and friends came for the great fishing in the lake, but after Labor Day weekend, the primary residents were a few owners who weathered the cold winters in the cottages. The large stockpiles of lumber to warm their homes disclosed the permanent residents. Otherwise, the homes were usually closed down by fall, with boats and fishing gear stored away. Usually no vehicles were left on the property—except the broken-down car in the driveway at Adolph Rinck’s cottage.
That closed-up cottage across the way suddenly had life. The place was overgrown with weeds and grass, a clear sign no one had been around for a while. Now a newer, white car was there. A Plymouth, he realized. Borgen peeked out the window and noticed that the white car that had left in the afternoon had returned. Borgen precipitously walked over to introduce himself and to see if the owner was around.
As he approached the two women, they were unloading some groceries. The blond-haired woman was near the car while the brunette walked inside the cottage. 129
Borgen stated he was surprised to see visitors at the cottage. He inquired of the blond-haired woman about the cottage as he quickly noticed the woman’s uneasiness.
“Wait a minute,” replied Monica, the blonde, as she walked quickly to the door with a bag of groceries. Annette, the brunette, walked toward Borgen. 130
“What’s going on?” the neighbor asked. 131 Annette, familiar with her grandfather’s cottage, replied that the “old man was coming back to the place and they are just here to clean it up for him.” 132
Borgen thought that comment was odd. As he said goodbye to her, he sensed there were other people in the cottage. The blond woman nervously directed her attention to another person in the cottage as she unpacked the groceries. Borgen walked back home and thought to himself, “That’s funny. That old man is eighty-four years old, and he moved away a year and a half ago because he’s sick. I’m surprised that he’s well enough to come back.” 133
As he returned to his cottage, Borgen took one last glance back and realized something suspicious was going on over there.
AS SOON AS BORGEN walked away, Annette swiftly walked into the cottage and made eye contact with Monica. They both thought that had been a close call. Annette walked into Henry’s bedroom and saw him propped up on two mattresses, with part of the mattresses hanging over the small box of springs underneath. She shared with him that the neighbor had come over and talked with them as they unloaded the groceries. She
