As I swiped at spider webs and nudged through bushes, I thought how this trail to the stables I led Perla along was what had led me to Whitney. Eddy and Iâd made it last summer. Mom had become practical and was always busy running Kruse Whitewater Adventures, so she didnât visit the fort at all. Eddy and I, though, we went every day.
Weâd sneak from the trail down to the creek, to a spot out of sight from home, or over to the stables to watch the horses and lessons. I hated going to the creek, didnât want to see a creek or a river ever again. But I couldnât get enough of watching the stables.
As we got braver, we snuck out of the forest to watch the lessons from the white fences surrounding the pastures. We got even braver and came to the fence around the arena. Or at least Eddy did.
I was chicken, so heâd carry me piggyback to the arenaâs edge. I was getting too old to be carried that way, but I was so small, and Dad always carried me like that, so we both liked it.
One day at the start of August, a new girl rode out on a shiny black pony. Pink ribbons streamed off her braids as she sailed over the jumps. I thought that girl on that pony was the most amazing thing Iâd ever seen. When the pony leapt, it seemed he would soar up and up and up. I was thinking how Iâd give anything to have a pony that could lift me to the sky, when the girl stopped in front of us. The pony puffed as hard as a train from all the jumping.
âAre you supposed to be here?â she said.
âWeâre not hurting anything,â Eddy said. âBesides, who made you in charge?â
I tugged his arm, so he crouched down, and I held on around his neck as he lifted me piggyback. The pony stepped forward and puffed in my hair. Smiling, I touched his velvety nose.
âThis is Sir Charles,â Whitney said. âWant to come to my pool?â
âSure!â Eddy said.
âNot you!â Whitney said.
âCome on, Rill.â Eddy started away.
I almost didnât say anything. I definitely did not want to go swimming. Even so, I pictured Whitney and Sir Charles soaring up and up and up, and âBut I wanna go!â spilled out.
Eddy said, âFine!â and put me down. âI donât want to hang out with you babies anyway!â
That was the day Eddy and I started fighting.
I remembered his surprised face this morning. Do you ever wonder why, that day, Dad didnât just stay away from the edge? I mean, itâs what he wouldâve told us to do. Why had I asked him that? Why would they do something that they knew was dangerous? Why had I asked Perla that? I definitely could not trust my mouth.
Perla and I came to the edge of the forest. I stepped through the white fence around the pasture, but Perla watched from the trees.
