Chapter 10 - The Graduation Ceremony
Today was the day construction was to finally begin. The Ri, the Meshu and the Nisu, were too busy with their own duties, so they had left the remodeling of the Family Wing to the Rion. Ariane had worked with B’Ran to interview three architects. After meeting them and going over their portfolios, she chose one that she felt she could work with. His name was S’Eve. It had taken two weeks for the Rion and the architect, S’Eve to agree on a floor plan. When the floor plan was completed, Ariane and S’Eve interviewed several contractors, finally choosing one. Throughout the entire process, the Rion kept her Lady-in-Waiting close so she could consult with her when needed. It became known throughout the Palace that Nebet Khepri held a position of extreme importance and had the right ear of the Rion.
After the plans were drawn up and the contractor hired, all of their personal belongings had been packed up and put into storage, except for the essentials, which were moved into the Guest Wing of the Palace. This included the bast and baket bast who served them, as well as their belongings. They would all be living in the Guest Wing for the next three months. Three months was a hard deadline. Everyone working on the project knew that the Rion had to have everything finished before the new ku (the new princess) arrived.
Since they already had established a firm timeline, the next step would be demolition, which would start today. After that would come the framework for the new rooms; the systems that would handle the air flow, temperature, power and water; and then the walls would go up. She really wanted to get to that stage so she could actually see how everything was going to look. It wouldn’t just be 3-D images on a view screen any longer.
Today is going to be so very busy, she thought. She had promised D’Mun that she would attend a Graduation Ceremony for a regiment of troops today. She also needed to talk to B’Nar about what food would be served next week when the Ambassador from the Neway System was to visit. She had researched the Ambassador and found that the Nees, as they were called, had very particular dietary likes and dislikes. D’Mun had told her that the outpost on Neway III was important, as it bordered on the space closest to where the Vulo, their enemy from long ago, had come from when they attacked the Anu Collaboration. She wanted to make sure the Neway Ambassador was treated well during his visit. Along with those duties, she wanted to sneak away so she could watch the demolition of the Family Wing. She would be happy to see the Prime Triad’s Suite disappear. Perhaps she could get Khepri to work with B’Nar; Khepri had helped her research the Ambassador.
Later that morning, when she met Khepri in the Grand Salon, she said to her, “I have had to cancel our lessons for today, there is just too much to do.
