“I have trouble sleeping,” he said, and passed me a stack of pancakes. “I’m surprised Jacob hasn’t sued the airline yet for taking so long with it.”

“He is impulsive, but it’s his own fault. If he was patient enough for them to load it at the airport, there wouldn’t be a problem.” We both laughed, and Javier sat beside me to eat. “You know, I’m surprised everyone agreed to this whole foursome deal.”

“I’m surprised you were reluctant,” he said, and nudged my side, “The girl I know would have jumped at the chance and taken control right away.”

“Yeah, I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I guess I was out of the game for too long. Sometimes you have to choose between work and play. Since the promotion in the company, I’ve been a little out of it.”

“Don’t worry, Vanessa,” he said, hugging me from the side, “We all lose our groove sometimes.”

“You’ve never lost it!” I said, while drowning my pancakes in syrup.

“I’m a man, we live by different rules.”

I rolled my eyes, and scrolled through a few emails. “Do you know what car service Jacob uses? I’m trying to set up a meeting with someone, and I know Jacob is picky with how his friends travel.”

“There’s already a car here.”

“What? How? I haven’t called anyone.”

“Yeah, it showed up here five minutes ago. I said you weren’t awake yet, and the guy said he didn’t mind waiting.”

“Guy? What guy?” Javier shrugged and shoved his mouth full of pancakes. I ran to get my purse from the bedroom, and headed outside.

Standing on the sidewalk beside a black limousine was a man I’d never met, but knew his face by heart.
