Chapter Seven
Promises for Reaching Your Destiny
In the Introduction, I shared the story of Hagar who became an outcast and decided to flee her familiar surroundings because of Saraiâs jealousy. In the wilderness, alone, pregnant, and vulnerable, she encountered the Angel of the Lord (Jesus), and being so moved by His love and compassion, she called Him, âthe God who sees me.â During her interaction with God, He spoke purpose over her life and blessed her and the son she had conceived.
Meanwhile in the camp, Abram and Sarai were discouraged and striving to believe the promise God had given them. Consistent with Godâs love and character, He didnât punish Abram and Sarai for taking matters into their own hands. Thereâs great comfort in knowing that we arenât punished for our mistakes. Sarai did eventually conceive a son with Abram named Isaac, which means âlaughter,â who became a great nation and a blessing to all generations. God continued to faithfully interact with them and changed their names to match their destiny before they ever saw the physical manifestation. Abram, meaning âexalted fatherâ became Abraham, meaning âfather of a multitude.â And Sarai, or âprincess,â became Sarah, meaning ânoblewoman.â
God has made you a blessing in your community. He has given you all the territory you can see.
God communicated to Abraham the details of his blessed life, and they have become the foundations of our faith. The blessings and promises He gave Abraham and Sarah were for vision and empowerment to live out their purpose. These same promises are available for you to fulfill your own purpose.
The blessings of Abraham are vast and far-reaching. God already has blessed your family, your name, and your children. He promises protection, provision, and authority. You can be fruitful, righteous, and a blessing to the nations. You qualify for all the blessings of Abraham through the blood of Jesus. All this and more is available for you because Jesus has already made provision. All you need to do to receive is believe.
Galatians explains that God freed us from the curse and positioned us to receive all the promises and blessings He made in times past: âChrist redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for usâfor it is written, âCursed is everyone who is hanged on a treeââso that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faithâ (Gal. 3:13-14, ESV).
The covenant was with Jesus and the promises made to Him. Because we are in Him, we qualify to participate in the covenant. We have a covenant of peace, sealed by the blood of Jesus, and our actions will not change the covenant.
Iâve compiled a list of the blessings
