The drive back to Lumby was long and silent, with Mark continually checking his rearview mirror to ensure Bud Harley’s nephew’s tow truck was close behind them. Due to the instability of the rear axle, they could go no faster than thirty miles an hour. Pam constantly checked the clock, concerned about the seven guests who had made dinner reservations for six thirty.

“Mark, can’t we go any faster? I have an entire dining room to set up and a kitchen to clean before I even begin to cook.”

“Her wheels will fall off if we go any faster.”

Just after they passed through Rocky Mount, Pam broke her silence again. “So, what’s your plan?” she finally asked. “Where are you going to have him take it?”

“To Montis, I guess,” Mark said, knowing full well that would provoke an unpleasant conversation. “Honey, it was an honest mistake.”

“I know,” she said, patting him on the knee, trying to be supportive. “But what are you going to do with it now?”

Mark thought for a minute. “It’s not worth anything to us without an engine. So, maybe we should bring it over to Dakin’s Garage and have Jeremy tune it up.”

Pam laughed. “I think ‘tuning it up’ is a bit of an understatement. Do you know how much an engine will cost?”

“It can’t be more than a thousand dollars, can it?” Mark suggested as he glanced at Pam. “What do you think?”

“I wouldn’t have the foggiest idea. But,” she said, turning around and looking at the tow truck following close behind them, “I don’t think we have any choice.”
