Chapter 7

Time seemed to have suspended in the banquet hall, blending every unsettling moment into a single candlelit blur, but the second the doors shut behind us we were hurried away at a truly astonishing pace. Some of the younger captives were having trouble keeping up, and the girls in the high-heeled shoes grabbed desperately onto those around them for balance.

There wasn’t a person left in the corridors, they were all still enjoying the feast, but still the guards created a tight perimeter around us—as if the viewing had passed and we were no longer allowed to be seen. Or maybe it was so we wouldn’t lose our senses and bolt for the nearest window.

The thought had certainly crossed my mind...

The crown prince? Had that really been the crown prince?

A belated shudder shook my shoulders as I played back the strange moment in my mind. My jaw was still throbbing from where he’d grabbed me. I could still feel his fingers on my skin.

And those eyes. As long as I lived, I’d never be able to forget those eyes.

It was as if someone had carved the description of a man from some lustrous stone, but had stopped just short of bringing him to life. His body was tall and well-proportioned. His muscles lean and toned from years of swinging a sword. Thanks to the medicinal wonders of the capital there wasn’t a single blemish on his fair skin, and his face bore an almost unnatural symmetry.

I supposed some might call him beautiful. I didn’t see him that way.

He reminded me of a stream in the middle of winter, one so deep in the forest that the sun could never reach it and the ice never managed to thaw. When we were children, we used to dare each other to take a step on that frozen water. Every so often, someone would fall through.

“Keep it moving.”

There was a crack in the air behind us and we picked up the pace, following the commander through a series of nonsensical corridors, until at last we reached a set of stone doors. It was here that he came to a stop, pulling a set of thick keys from a loop on his pocket.

“For the next seven days, this is to be your home.” He examined them briefly before sliding the correct one into the lock. “You are to stay here at all times, unless instructed otherwise. If ever you do leave, it must always be with an escort. There is to be no going off on your own, no matter who might have bid for your company. Do you understand?”

...not really.

I cast a quick look around and saw faces just as confused as mine.

A bid for our company?

We had been guaranteed a week’s freedom before the vultures were given leave to descend, and when they did so I had assumed it would be in some orderly fashion or behind closed doors, away from our sight. Was there to be some kind of bidding war?
