(2 Weeks Later)

Anger roiling inside, Avery stared at the weeping woman sitting across his desk. Her husband sat beside her, an arm around her shoulders to provide comfort that seemed to have little effect. Mr. and Mrs. Farley owned a ranch south of Mystery near Bondurant.

The Liars Club had done it again. This time, they’d accused Mrs. Farley of having an affair with a lineman from the power company. Their evidence? She’d stopped to talk to the guy at Karen’s Cafe a couple of days prior, having recognized him from high school. Nothing clandestine. No supposedly-secret rendezvous. Nothing. She’d simply spoken to the man in a public place. For all of five minutes, apparently.

Discouragement pierced his heart, joining forces with the anger churning in his gut to twist pain through him. How many times had he talked to those women, both as a group and individually? Yet, they obviously hadn’t heeded a single word.

He tapped the paper under his hand. A print-out of the offer from the church in Chicago. The pastor and deacon board had been very patient with him about a decision to candidate. Every time he’d prayed about it, he’d felt unsettled. What if that’s Satan’s way of discouraging me from doing what God wants? I’m obviously not making a difference in Mystery. Why would the Lord want me where I’m totally useless?

“I don’t understand why they keep doing this.” Mr. Farley’s eyes narrowed.

Though the man’s tone was gruff, Avery knew he wasn’t the target of the anger. “I wish I knew what to tell you, sir. They’ve been resistant to correction of any kind. I’ve talked to all of them multiple times over the past couple of years, both individually and as a group. It doesn’t seem to have made a bit of difference. Quite frankly, I’m at a loss.”

“I’m afraid we won’t be returning to church here.” Mr. Farley gently gripped his wife’s elbow and guided her to her feet. “I won’t subject Emily to those women anymore.”

“I understand.” Avery stood, rounded the desk to shake the man’s hand, and watched as Mr. Farley led his still-sobbing wife out. Great. My failure to fix the problem is driving people away now.

He closed the door, returned to his seat, and picked up the sheet of paper.

I’m totally ineffective here. The Liars Club only sees a kid with no authority or knowledge. I can’t even get my own father to talk to me. Maybe God wants me in the city. If so, I’ll just have to find a way to cope with being in an office all day every day. If it’s really the Lord’s will, He’ll provide the endurance to make it work.

With a deep sigh and a heavy heart, Avery picked up the phone and dialed the Chicago number.
