(2 Weeks Later)
Anger roiling inside, Avery stared at the weeping woman sitting across his desk. Her husband sat beside her, an arm around her shoulders to provide comfort that seemed to have little effect. Mr. and Mrs. Farley owned a ranch south of Mystery near Bondurant.
The Liars Club had done it again. This time, theyâd accused Mrs. Farley of having an affair with a lineman from the power company. Their evidence? Sheâd stopped to talk to the guy at Karenâs Cafe a couple of days prior, having recognized him from high school. Nothing clandestine. No supposedly-secret rendezvous. Nothing. Sheâd simply spoken to the man in a public place. For all of five minutes, apparently.
Discouragement pierced his heart, joining forces with the anger churning in his gut to twist pain through him. How many times had he talked to those women, both as a group and individually? Yet, they obviously hadnât heeded a single word.
He tapped the paper under his hand. A print-out of the offer from the church in Chicago. The pastor and deacon board had been very patient with him about a decision to candidate. Every time heâd prayed about it, heâd felt unsettled. What if thatâs Satanâs way of discouraging me from doing what God wants? Iâm obviously not making a difference in Mystery. Why would the Lord want me where Iâm totally useless?
âI donât understand why they keep doing this.â Mr. Farleyâs eyes narrowed.
Though the manâs tone was gruff, Avery knew he wasnât the target of the anger. âI wish I knew what to tell you, sir. Theyâve been resistant to correction of any kind. Iâve talked to all of them multiple times over the past couple of years, both individually and as a group. It doesnât seem to have made a bit of difference. Quite frankly, Iâm at a loss.â
âIâm afraid we wonât be returning to church here.â Mr. Farley gently gripped his wifeâs elbow and guided her to her feet. âI wonât subject Emily to those women anymore.â
âI understand.â Avery stood, rounded the desk to shake the manâs hand, and watched as Mr. Farley led his still-sobbing wife out. Great. My failure to fix the problem is driving people away now.
He closed the door, returned to his seat, and picked up the sheet of paper.
Iâm totally ineffective here. The Liars Club only sees a kid with no authority or knowledge. I canât even get my own father to talk to me. Maybe God wants me in the city. If so, Iâll just have to find a way to cope with being in an office all day every day. If itâs really the Lordâs will, Heâll provide the endurance to make it work.
With a deep sigh and a heavy heart, Avery picked up the phone and dialed the Chicago number.
