A short while later, Alex began assembling the solar gear in the master bedroom on the second floor of the house. That room had windows on three sides of the house and received the most sunlight. By setting it up there, he figured he could keep a full charge on the 12v battery, with their limited usage plan.
Alex hooked up the charge controller and the adapters to convert the energy to AC as well as the standard DC outlets to charge small electronics using simple car charger adapters. He organized everything in an old milk crate and zip tied the cables to try and make it look as neat as possible. The milk crate was attached to a luggage cart that he could wheel around to the different spots in the bedroom to get the most light. Once all of the wiring was set, he installed a mount that he made to attach the three 15 watt solar panels in tandem to the cart.
The whole power system was set up and functioning within the hour, so Alex left the solar panels in the window facing the front of the house. He decided to wait until a decent charge was built up in the battery before he would start using it to recharge his electronics. His radio batteries still had enough juice to last a few more days, if they only used them for morning check ins. Thinking ahead, though, Alex wanted to make sure to keep the radio batteries topped off at full, whenever possible, just in case the family had to bug out in a hurry. He knew that evacuation was a last resort, but it still needed to be a contingency that he planned for.
Next, Alex began to work on the water procurement plan, which was an important backup in case they had a disruption of the water supply from the tap. Water was essential for survival and clean water was not easy to come by in an urban setting like Boston. Luckily for the Stone family, the reservation land near their home had a couple of small brooks that they could get relatively decent water from, if they got desperate enough. There was also a small pond a mile and a half up the road, but the idea of carrying buckets of water from there didn’t interest Alex. Mother Brook, which was like a small river, was much closer than the pond, but likely contained too much runoff to make it useful for drinking water. It would be a good source of food from fishing, but fish was not a steady part of the Stone family diet and it would probably take virtual starvation for Olivia and the kids to eat it. Either way, Alex hoped that the rain catch idea that he had in mind would eliminate the need to seek water elsewhere. Their home was large, so it seemed that using the existing gutter system would be the best method to collect water with the least amount of effort.
