CHAPTER SIXTEEN

SOUTH KOREA MIN LEE WOO BUSINESSMAN

“HY SOO, I’VE LIVED WITH YOU FOR thirty years, knowing I could never own your heart. Do you know how painful that is? All I’ve ever had of you, is our son. Seung-Le has been by your side all these years. Why? Why are you bringing Min Lee back? Do you still want me to compete with a woman, who even in death, controls your heart? How could you ask this of me?”

“In-Tak Hyun! Stop this rant. What do you want from me? I let you send Min Lee away. Wasn’t that enough? Can’t I be with my son in my twilight years? Is that too much to ask?”

“You have a son right here in Korea.”

“I need to have Min Lee with me. I promised his mother on her deathbed; I would make sure he was not alone.”

“What about me? I’ve been alone for thirty years!’

“Mother.” Seung-Le’s voice came floating up the stairs. “Are you up there?”

“This is not over,” In-Tak Hyun said as she slammed the door on her way out of Hy Soo’s study. Halfway down the stairs, she met Seung-Le.

“Oma.” Seung-Le hurried toward his mom. “What’s with the bad attitude?” He hated when his mother was in a bad mood. Now was not the time to tell her he’d gotten engaged to Choi.

“Your brother is coming home.”

“And?”

“Seung-Le, I am warning you, don’t get too close to him.”

“Eomeoni, why do you dislike Min Lee so much?”

“Don’t listen to me, and I’m sure you’ll find out!” she huffed past him.

From the day Min Lee had arrived in Seoul, his mother had spent every waking moment creating a rift between him and his brother. He never understood why. He’d been a lonely child, and the truth was, he’d been overjoyed to have a big brother. When Min Lee left for London, he’d missed his Hyung a great deal, though he never dared breathe a word of it. Seung-Le followed his mother down the stairs, but she went into her bedroom and slammed the door. He wanted to know why his mother hated Min Lee so much. His mother, who loved him no matter what he did, must have a valid reason. Still, he loved the idea that Min Lee was coming back, but he’d watch his back, just in case.

As much as his father pleaded for him to move into the family house, Min Lee got a flat in Gangnam. Overlooking the Han River, the spacious flat boasted amazing views of Seoul’s skyline. Gangnam, which was nothing but wasteland when he was a child, had sprung up as the cool and hip place to be after the 1998 Olympics. Now taken over by K-pop idols, it wasn’t just Gangnam that impressed Min Lee; it was the fact that Seoul had transformed itself from a third-world country to one of the most prosperous in only a few decades and one of the most high-tech countries in the world. With a booming export economy and cultural power, it was a great time to be a proud Korean.
