CHAPTER TWO

A familiar-looking young man greeted them at the door and told them they were needed by Mr Zellow. They headed up to meet him, finding him pacing back and forth in his office – but instead of the drawn, pained face Amy had seen on him so much when it came to their time-travel work, he looked elated. His steps were bouncing, as if he had too much energy and didn’t know what to do with it.

“Amy! Elliot! Today is truly a magnificent day!” He rushed forward as if to hug them and caught himself at the last moment, shaking both of their hands in turn. “You will, of course, participate in the unveiling. You’ve already met your doubles and it will be quite easy to take them through. Since you left earlier this morning, I’ve had men transporting the devices all over – they’ll run the length of the nation before noon. The three of us will demonstrate the technology here, while other agents who have also made contact with their parallel selves will demonstrate in other regions.”

Amy thanked Blaine for the honor, though she wasn’t terribly surprised. She had figured both her and Elliot would demonstrate – if only because it had been their actions that had technically created the parallel universe.

“We’ve got the PR companies ready and waiting to go. As soon as the demonstrations are done, they’ll blast every newspaper, website, station, what-have-you with all of our press about this. I think it should go quite well, honestly.” He turned from them, pacing back and forth again. “I really do enjoy this part, showing the world our work. I missed being able to do it with the time machine, but people couldn’t really know about that one –” The thought seemed to catch him, and he whipped to them, his voice becoming more serious. “We are going with the story that the parallel universe has always existed. It has a past of its own, after all, and we do not plan to reveal that it may have resulted from – well…”

“We understand,” Amy said, and Elliot nodded along. Blaine smiled, his good mood returning, “We’ll move three devices to the square by noon. Thank you both again for your hard work!”

Amy realized, as she and Elliot parted in the hallway – he going to the Physics Department to check everything over for the thousandth time – that she was a bit nervous. A tech demonstration felt like it shouldn’t be scarier than regularly risking her own life, but the thought of millions of people watching with rapt attention as she and her parallel self materialized before them? People were going to lose their minds. Her phone beeped – an email from Blaine, outlining even more thoughts about the ceremony that he’d apparently forgotten to share in their meeting. She wasn’t the only one with nerves.

The hours before the demonstration passed fitfully. Amy couldn’t help but think of using the time machine to drop herself off right before noon.
