7 ∎ Wind the thread to a point just behind the wings, leaving a gap for the base of the hackle winds. Keeping the elk hair above the shank, pull it forward over the wings. Make sure you separate this bunch from the tails carefully before you pull it over the top. Take a single loose turn of thread over the elk hair and then tighten very firmly with a straight downward pull. Take three or four more turns of thread in the same way. Make sure you pull up slightly on the elk hair as you bind it in to keep it on top of the body.
