Following this introductory paragraph, the letter writer got to the true purpose of his communication. Luke Short was “one of the worst noted characters in our country” and he was guilty of “high handed murder”; now the subject of Courtright’s death was raised. According to the letter writer Courtright was “willfully and wantingly [sic] murdered, without a shadow of show for his life” and that Short had made it clear that he would do that to anyone “who does not coincide or concur in his views . . . without a moment’s notice.”
