Direct Sun vs. Overcast Light

People are always amazed when I say that cloudy days yield richer color. Yet, with these cactus images, one shot in direct overhead sun and the other under a diffuser, it’s clear that the second image renders the scene in more saturated, richer color because the overcast light of the diffuser has lessened the harsh contrast of bright sunlight. The effect is to make the image more readable because the shadows are not as dense.
