Chapter 11

Twisted Fate

Sebastian

Two years later

I knocked on Cliff’s door and listened to the familiar sound of basketballs bouncing in the background. The youth center, with its worn floors and chipped paint, had become a sanctuary to me. It had seen better days and I was worried the funds weren’t coming in like they used to. The internal team tackled major fixes like burst pipes, working in the center first, and if they couldn’t resolve the matters at hand, a professional was called. The boys fixed the peeling paint—and any other damaged areas. Overall, all repairs just took longer to tackle.

Not that I didn’t agree with it all. It gave the boys a sense of purpose and that they were being useful. When they helped out in their community center, they felt like they belonged. But I knew this change was a subtle way of saying the center wasn’t getting the help it needed.

Shutting it down was not an option. These kids couldn’t afford the center shutting down. For many, this was the only meal they had in their day. It was the only place someone would care enough to teach them something, whether it was Math, Science, or good morals. And I didn’t mind the extra work. It was the only thing that consumed me and took my mind off her.

It had been two years since I walked out of my sister’s garden. Two years since Isabella had told me that I deserved someone that could give me the future I wanted and that, somehow, she was holding me back. I still had no idea what she was talking about. We were so good together. She was perfect, and all I wanted.

I thought, hoped and prayed, that all she needed was more time. But time passed and she never gave me that chance.

A few months after that day in the garden, James needed to move to his New Orleans office and relocated with his family. Isabella didn’t go with, opting to let the company she worked for give her another family to nanny for. Without my sister telling me how she was doing, I hadn’t heard from her since.

“Come in, Sebastian!” Cliff’s voice boomed from the other side of the door.

As I entered, I saw Cliff sitting behind his desk, his silver hair catching the dim light of the office, a stark contrast to the vibrant energy outside.

“Thanks for coming. I’ve got some news,” Cliff began, his usual optimism tinged with a serious note. I sat across from him, waiting.

“It’s about the center,” he continued. “We haven’t been able to fix and patch up things in the last year as much as we’d have liked to. Teaching the boys how to paint, nail the wooden boards and apply cement on the building’s cracks hasn’t been enough to make the place safe and look presentable. But there are things they can’t fix that are starting to be a hazard to everyone around. I know it teaches them skills, but the center needs more, and I haven’t been able to deliver that.
