Chapter 15
Jasperâs and Clarkeâs feet pounded the broken pavement as they sprinted from alley to alley, sticking close to the shadows. Jasper led through the maze of streets without missing a beat, every twist and turn burned into his memory as Clarke followed closely behind. They moved in synchronicity.
âJust ahead now,â Jasper said, nodding toward a decrepit building in the shadow cast by a lone, flickering street lamp.
Clarke knew where they were: the ghetto. He was always told to stay clear of this part of town during the day, let alone being there after dark. It was easily the roughest part of town where crime thrived. Criminals ran rampant in the streets, robbing whoever crossed their paths. The Administration was more than happy to look the other way for a price.
A dark figure lay slumped against the light post right in front of the warehouse.
âIs he okay?â Clarke asked in a cautious tone.
âSteer clear. If you are the local you said you were, you know as well as I do that this is not the place to be making friends,â Jasper said in a muffled tone.
As they crossed the street, the figure groaned and shifted.
âHeâs out of it. Quick, follow me around back,â Jasper said, motioning to follow.
Clarke nodded and the two slipped down an alley toward a side door to the warehouse.
The door was slightly ajar and had a chain hanging from one of the handles with a broken lock attached to it.
âI guess they beat us here,â Jasper said with a smirk.
He pushed on the door which slowly gave way with a loud creak.
If the girls didnât open it, whoever did sure knows weâre coming, Clarke thought to himself as he slipped through the opening into the building.
Clarkeâs eyes widened; he was completely blind in the pitch black that took over. The smell of mildew hit his nose as the humid air flowed past him and out the door. He looked back over his shoulder seeing that the only light was coming from the doorway.
âMyra? Charlie? Are you in here?â Jasper called out in a hushed voice.
The two waited for a response. Silence filled the cold, dark air before they heard the sound of a match striking followed by a flash of light lighting up the corner of the room.
âOver here, you guys,â a familiar voice called out from behind the light.
The light grew brighter as the voice lit a few candles, revealing their two friends: Charlie and Myra.
âThank God,â Jasper exhaled as he ran over to hug Myra.
âCâmon, Jas, you actually thought we wouldnât make it?â Myra said with a smirk, flipping her hair. Her confidence bordered on cocky.
âNo, but thereâs always a risk,â Jasper replied.
Clarke awkwardly walked over, shoving his hands in his pockets. Myra looked up and narrowed her eyes at him.
âHey, what was that? You couldâve really screwed us back there,â Myra said, the anger in her voice intensifying as she approached him.
âI, uhâ¦â Clarke began, stopping dead in his tracks.
He knew this was coming and braced himself for the worst.
