The rain had finally stopped but the sky was heavy with the possibility of another downpour. The caravan was gutted, the steel frame exposed. Sarah watched the SOCO, suited up, moving inside what remained of the structure. It was hard to see what forensic opportunities there could be. The ground was too churned to get any useful tyre impressions. The SOCO had taken some samples from inside the ruts. Who knows, they might get lucky if they stopped a muddy car. But every car was muddy in this county.

The site owner stood beside her, rocking on his heels. He was cloth-capped, in wellies, old brown corduroys and a waxed jacket.

No one else was staying on the site, he said. Hard to get people during the winter. During the summer, too, for that matter. The site was being sold. It was going to be a riverside development. Different-sized houses, all with their own garages. Looked nice on the drawings.

He didn’t know much about the rental, he said. Some thin girl.

‘How did she pay?’

‘Cash every month.’

‘You didn’t think something was up?’

‘Not my business, was it?’
