Cala Millor to Porto Cristo

The next resort complex, the largest and loudest on the east coast, is Cala Millor, where three separate calas merge together along the sandy beach of Son Severa. The resort is still growing, and the neighbouring promontory of Punta de N’Amer, a 200-hectare (495-acre) nature reserve, is the only area that has swerved development.

The road south passes the Safari-Zoo (for more information, click here) before reaching Porto Cristo, an old-fashioned resort with a pleasant, local atmosphere. There is a large yacht marina, an unremarkable beach and a couple of traditional hotels vying with modern buildings. It’s popular with Mallorcan visitors at weekends, when the narrow streets can get clogged.

Most of the tour buses here are shuttling visitors to the Coves del Drac · [map] (www.cuevasdeldrach.com; daily mid-March to Oct 10am–5pm, Nov to mid-March 10.45am–3.30pm), south of town. Seven daily tours in summer (four in winter) run through 2km (1 mile) of brightly lit chambers and spectacular formations, culminating with classical music recitals and boat trips on the 177m (581ft)-long subterranean lake named after Edouard-Alfred Martel, the French speleologist who explored the caves in 1896.

On the road to Manacor, the Coves dels Hams (www.cuevasdelshams.com; daily end March to June 10am–5pm, July–29 Oct 10am–5pm, 30 Oct–15 Nov 10am–4.30pm, mid-Nov to March 10am–4pm) are competing for subterranean custom by offering a digital ‘virtual adventure’.
