La Mesa International Airport

San Pedro Sula, Honduras

“She’ll be fine,” Doc assured Sam at 10:04 p.m. as they watched Abbie walk off the plane alone in San Pedro Sula. “She’s smart. She’ll keep her head about her.”

Sam breathed deep, gripped his seat’s leather armrests, and fought to control an inexplicable surge of panic as Abbie walked through the exit and out of sight.

With nothing but a backpack for self-defense.

Yeah, they’d gone over the plan, such as it was. Over and over and over it. She was to take no chances. Do exactly as they’d told her. Count on them to know how and when to strike. She knew the drill.

Yet he couldn’t begin to count the bad feelings he had about this.

He couldn’t explain it but somewhere along the line he’d gone from not believing in her innocence, to wanting to believe. Then he’d crossed the final line.

He believed her.

And son of a bitch, if he still didn’t want her.

He flew out of the seat, ignored Savage and Doc’s startled looks, and bolted after her. He caught up with her just before she left the jetway tunnel.

She spun around like she’d been shot when he snagged her arm. When she realized it was him she sagged against the tunnel wall, found her breath. “You scared me half to death.”

“I’ve changed my mind. You’re not doing this.”

Confusion furrowed her brows. “What are you talking about? We’re here. Nader’s waiting.”

He cupped her shoulders with both hands. “It’s too risky.”

After she got over the shock of him touching her, she made a sound of disbelief. “Yeah. I got that part. In spades. But it’s been risky from the get-go. So I don’t…I don’t understand.” She searched his face, thoroughly baffled. “What’s this about? Why do you all of a sudden care about the risk to me? As far as you’re concerned, I’m a liar and a thie—”

“Goddammit,” he swore. “I was wrong, okay?”

She blinked up at him, startled into silence.

“I was wrong,” he repeated, more in control now that he’d quit fighting what his gut had been telling him all along: She was clean. “I made a mistake about you. I’m not going to compound it by letting you anywhere near that murdering bastard.”

Her eyes were liquid and wary but bafflement slowly transitioned to something softer. Not trust. She wasn’t nearly ready to take that leap.

“Why the change of heart?”

Yeah. That was the million-dollar question all right. One Sam couldn’t answer for either of them. “Pick a reason. Doesn’t matter. Bottom line, I can’t let you do this.”

She stared at him for all of a heartbeat. Firmly shook her head. “He’s my brother. I can’t not do this.”

It all came back to Sam then. His father’s face. Beaten, defeated. His father’s voice when he’d begged him to go after Nader.

“You can’t not do this.”

“Just do what you said you would do.” Her quiet conviction sealed both of their fates. “Just get there in time.”

Sam forced himself to let go of her shoulders, still fighting the urge to drag her back onto the plane to safety.
