“Much like you, my father is well versed in charm, so it didn’t take much to convince my mother, who’s always up for fun and adventure, to go out with them for a few drinks after the show. From there, they just started dating. Boring but true. Lasted all of three weeks. That’s about how long it took for things to sink in for my dad. He wasn’t just dating a beautiful face. Two weeks later she found out she was pregnant. Seven years later he accepted it. Add another eight or nine on top of that, and he decided he was ready to be a father. And that sums up my parents and how I play into that relationship.”

Her eyes are turned down, staring at her fingers which she’s attempting to tie into knots again from the looks of it.

“I’m not like him, you know?” I say quietly.

Her gaze lifts until our eyes meet. She nods. “I do.”
