TWENTY-TWO

Zach approached Holly, his hands lifted as if to choke her, but then dropped them to her shoulders and shook her until her teeth rattled. “How could you be so stupid?”

She pushed him away and rubbed her jaw. “You mean how could I give you an alibi when you clearly needed one?”

He scoffed. “I mean slapping yourself in the face. You’ve got to stop this nonsense, or I’m going to have to cart you back to that shrink.”

“Cart away. Dr. Washington says I’m sane.”

“Then I’ll get a second opinion. I’ve got to do something… Detective Denton thinks I hit you.”

“He might. But more to the point, he thinks you killed Beth Gunther. Let’s focus on that, why don’t we?”

He gaped at her, and for a moment, it seemed she had him on the ropes.

She clasped her hands together, hating herself for using the poor woman’s death to her own advantage, but when she’d told Denton she’d do anything to protect their daughter, she’d meant it.

And, besides, she believed, deep in her heart, that Zach had nothing to do with Beth’s murder. He probably hadn’t even slept with her. He was far too busy obsessing over Holly for any of that. But it would be better if he didn’t know she thought he was innocent. “Where were you that night?”

“None of your damn business.”

He was definitely hiding something. Not murder, but something. Maybe he had been having an affair after all. If she had to guess with whom, she’d say Donna.

Fine. He could screw anyone he wanted, as long as it wasn’t Holly.

But what if?

No. Not possible.

Zach might be a controlling creep, but he wasn’t a killer.

But what if?

Then it would be all the more imperative to stop him from getting custody. Even if she thought he was the devil incarnate, if she could negotiate a deal, she’d do it.

“Where were you?” she asked again, trying to sound like a woman who actually believed her husband might be a murderer.

“I was with you.” He paced the perimeter of the room.

Holly heard Jolene whimpering through the baby monitor. She lifted it, watching her daughter on the screen as she rolled onto her side and drifted back to sleep, a beautiful smile playing on her lips.

She steeled her spine.

There was no turning back, now—not when she’d already lied to the police. “Stop playing games. You weren’t home. That night, I was sick with worry. Tamara called me in shock, and all I could think of was how devastated I’d be if anything happened to you. I was pregnant with Jolene, and I spent the entire night crying. I texted you, but you didn’t respond. I thought you were at the hospital.”

He paced in ever narrowing circles around her before coming to a halt, just inches away. “What are you talking about? I was with you.”

“No. I thought you were delivering a baby, but obviously you weren’t or you’d have simply said so when the detective asked your whereabouts. Maybe you were murdering your student that night.
