RIDING THE CLOWN

The post office in Ogmore-by-Sea had lots of posters and cards in the window. Two local window cleaners each claimed to be Ogmore’s ‘original’ window cleaner, a plumber offered quick call outs, and half the town seemed to be offering their bikes for sale.

There was also a poster announcing the arrival of a ‘Lord Punchinella’, making his debut appearance in an Ogmore that day. It was this one that had captured the attention of Harlequin.

He had ridden into the town on the back of a Brighella. The power of the magic box had reduced them to little more than animals, but they still had their uses. Harlequin had asked the Dotore to fashion him a saddle. Riding on the back, the largest of them, a clown almost seven feet tall and with a chest like the bonnet of a small car, wasn’t the most comfortable way to travel, but there wasn’t a single creature in the galaxy that didn’t enjoy a piggy-back, not even Harlequin. And fun had been in rather short supply since his disastrous attempt to expunge Lucy Wilson from this world.

Ideally, he needed to kill something. For now, a piggy-back would do.

Harlequin had known it would be posted somewhere. No Lord of Clowns could be using the Folding Space without his arrival being notified.

It was etiquette.

It was the rules.
