Tabitha returned home later that afternoon and threw her keys in the bowl on the hallway table. They clinked against Logan’s. Her heart ached to see them, but immediately a little anger rippled through her. At Logan and herself. She simply should’ve been across the details of the business. She’d left it all to him as he insisted on managing it, but now he was gone; all it left her with were questions.

It was how it was. Grief was a funny thing. She lobbed between sad and scared, then angry and guilty, and then back to sad and scared. She’d heard of the seven stages of grief, but surely most people didn’t hurtle through them at a such alarming speed and jump back and forth within moments. Whether it was normal or not, after the mental gymnastics of the afternoon in trying to get her head around the business and why the profit was down, she was exhausted. She rubbed her temples, took a long deep breath, and walked through to the kitchen to pour herself a drink.

Peals of laughter echoed from outside, accompanied by splashing. She paused and walked out to the balcony. Peering over the side to investigate, she found the noise was coming from Rich’s house. The tall, slim blonde woman, who she’d previously seen at Rich’s, was in the pool, clad in a black swimsuit and sunglasses, along with another woman.

She did a double-take. Peri? What was she doing down there? The blonde woman and Peri were throwing a ball across the pool. Rich emerged from the house and spoke to them before returning inside.

Her chest tightened. This only proved what she’d thought about Rich. Men his age weren’t interested in women like her. Why would they be? Little wonder he’d got along well with Logan. Anger and hurt and rage bubbled up.

She’d forgiven Logan, hadn’t she?

She retreated inside and closed the door behind her.

As she looked around the house, her heart sank. The beautiful high ceilings, the expansive windows, and the lush outlook over Pearl Point. What if she had to let this go? It had never been her dream. She would’ve been satisfied with less, far less. As the years had gone by, the houses had become bigger and grander, even though it was just the two of them. Yet, sometimes she yearned for that small apartment they leased when they were first married. It was a studio apartment, with barely enough room for a double bed and a small table and chairs. Tabitha would sneakily pick some flowers from the park opposite, and she’d cook instant noodles.

She stood in front of a piece of art Logan had purchased a few years earlier at some auction they’d attended. A whirl of colours blurred in front of her. There was so much depth in the simplicity.

Sometimes, the innocent romance of the all-consuming love of their early years as a couple was similar. There was only adoration for each other. No flashy cars, no sprawling beach
