THE RSR PROCESS

The action of letting go is subtle. Think of letting go of a small rock that you’re holding in your hand. You simply open your fingers and it releases to the ground. There is minimal muscular effort; you’re not throwing it or clutching it. But when practiced regularly, letting go is an incredibly powerful way to take care of yourself. When we are experts at letting go, we become less fearful about giving up things that are not working or not necessary, clearing the way so that we engage in what really matters. This could be in a relationship with another person or in prioritizing all the things that need to be accomplished in our lives. When you are adept at letting go, you organically pick and choose your battles. Practicing letting go creates more ease in your life; there is less struggle, less forcing, less longing for something to be other than it is.

Whether you’re on your mat or in real life, letting go is a simple three-step process, something I like to call the RSR Process: release, surrender, receive. You can practice RSR in the letting-go poses in this chapter and at any moment in life when you’re feeling the need for a greater sense of ease, like when circumstances seem particularly charged or forced.
