“Let’s start with the big stuff,” Jackie said. “Sofa, recliner, bed, table.”

It was late that afternoon, and Aaron was in the garage with Jackie and Stan, strategizing how to move his furniture into the house. They were all dressed for exertion, in t-shirts and gym shorts, with Stan sporting a blue bandana tied around his head that kept his bushy brown hair in check. Mrs. Sobel had texted Aaron a few hours ago to say the house was finally ready, and word had spread around town. Jackie had called, offering to help with the move, and when he stopped by the Smoothie Dudes to pick up a couple of jumbo-sized smoothies on his way over, Stan had decided to help out as well, leaving Trey to handle the store.

“Bet you’re happy to settle in,” Jackie said as he picked up the end of Aaron’s tan sofa.

“Even happier to sleep on a bed again,” Aaron said as he lifted the other end and Stan took the middle.

“Where you been sleeping anyway?” Jackie said.

Aaron answered as they shuffled across the driveway and toward the front step, the screen door propped open with a ceramic planter from Mrs. Sobel’s garden. Stan and Jackie were both big guys and super strong, and Aaron couldn’t believe how the sofa was dipping on his side. He took a deep breath and heaved it higher. He needed to get back to the college gym this week—and not just to take a shower.

They maneuvered their way to the living room. “Where do you want it? Across from the fireplace?” Jackie asked.

“Sure,” Aaron said, and they moved it into position and set it down. He stood and arched his back as he surveyed the first floor. It was a nice place, just as it had seemed in the pictures he’d seen when he started searching online. Small, but plenty of room for one. The living room was spacious enough for everything he had—his couch, the leather recliner his brother had given him, a couple of lamp tables, and his TV, which would fit nicely on the wall above the fireplace. The back window had a glimpse of the lake that was especially pretty right now, as the sun headed downward, glowing golden above the water.

They returned to the garage and picked up his bed. Tanya had found it at a second-hand store, and they’d refinished it with a cherry stain when she lived with him in Florida. She’d left it with him when she moved to New York because her place was way too small for it. Still, she’d loved that bed, and he always expected her to come back for it. He never considered getting rid of it, even after he moved out of the house they’d shared and into an apartment. He was sure he’d hear from her again, if only to arrange to come get it. He held onto that bed so he’d have it when she called.

The three of them carried it upstairs. “Slowly, slowly,”
