Chapter Thirteen
After going through her available wardrobe carefully, Holland decided she hadnât brought anything up to the eveningâs task, so off she went shopping. Hours later, she returned with a simple little black dress, not too short, but form-fitting enough to leave no mysteries about her figure. The boat neckline made the most of her collarbone and long neck but seemed almost demur, while the cap sleevesâblack leather studded with silverâadded a dash of sauciness and should work with Samâs attire to cast them as a couple because, unless she missed her guess, he would show up in black leather tonight. Paired with black heels and a voluminous fringed black wrap that she sometimes actually wore as a skirt, sheâd be eye-catching and comfortable. She decided to wear her hair down and loose and keep her jewelry to a pair of silver hoops and a single silver bangle. Sheâd even picked up a black mask.
With that settled, she felt comfortable enough to speak to her grandmother on the phone. They chatted and laughed about inconsequential things. Holland promised to send photos of her and Fin and their mother after she returned to St. Louis, but she wasnât sure she would. It all depended on Sam.
Suspecting that it wouldnât do to keep him waiting, she dressed early and sat waiting on the sofa when a knock came at her door ten minutes before the appointed hour. She hurried to answer, her heart skipping a beat when she found Sam standing there in black pants, a plain white T-shirt, and a collarless black leather jacket studded in silver.
âIâm a little early,â he said. âHope you donâtâ¦â His words dwindled away as his gaze slid down then up again. âWow. You look great. I mean, you always look great, but tonight you lookâ¦â He blinked and smiled, adding emphasis to the word. âGreat.â
She smiled back. âThank you. Iâll just get my things.â
He stayed in the open doorway, not coming into the room. She threw on the wrap, letting both ends trail to the hem of her dress behind her, tucked her wallet beneath one arm, picked up the mask, and turned with a fresh smile. He stepped back and let her pass into the corridor before pulling the door closed behind her. They walked side by side to the elevator. He set his hand in the small of her back as she stepped into the waiting car, then followed, and pushed the necessary button. As the elevator made its descent, they chatted.
âHope you didnât mind my mother stopping by.â
âNot at all.â
âBy the way, I have something for you. Donât let me forget.â
âAll right.â
âHow was the rest of your day?â
âEasy. Just a little shopping.â
âFridays are always a bit slow for me.â
âEasy day for both of us then.â
âI was thinking burgers and fries for dinner, but with that dress we could go anywhere you like.â
âBurgers and fries are fine.â
âI like a girl whoâs easy to please.â
She fluttered her eyelashes at him. âYou would not know
