Crossroads
"Bill. We're here." Matthew's soft voice broke through Bill's reverie. A million possible futures had filled his daydreams as the roads sped by in the dark, slushy rain hitting the windshield as the temperature dropped. He'd kept his eye on Matthew, the bionic staring straight ahead.
Now Bill was home, and he had to make a choice. The cabin beckoned to him with promises of safety, but he knew if he said nothing, Matthew would leave, and Bill would never see him again. He didn't have any more time to think about it. Wasting Matthew's time with false hope wasn't an option. There had never been a clearer divergence in the path that life offered him than the crossroads he sat at now.
Matthew powered down the car. Bill knew it was foolish to draw attention with its lights and, even worse, waste the precious power left in its cells. Matthew would need it all to return to Sebastian and have his artificial uterus removed so that someone else might have a chance at carrying the world's hope inside them.
"Guess this is it." Bill made no effort to move or open the door. "You mind if we wait for a lull in the rain? My joints, they hate the damp."
"Take as much time as you need." Matthew broke away from his stoic forward-facing gaze and turned to Bill with warmth in his eyes. "I wanted to thank you for all you've done for me. You saved my life, even though you hate bionics. You showed me kindness."
"It was nothin'." Bill's voice sounded strained even to himself, his vocal cords pulled tight with the weight of his emotion. He didn't want to break down here in front of Matthew. He could cry alone later, with the last of the whiskey he'd been saving for a special occasion. Maybe he wouldn't make it through the night. There was nothing to look forward toâ no hope, no light. Detroit was gone, and he could no longer live under the illusion that the world continued out there in some fashion while he chose to live as a hermit away from it all.
There was another choice, of course, but it seemed unlikely. The concept of becoming a father again, of starting a family out here in the wilderness with his bionic partner. With Matthew. It felt so surreal when he examined it, like a future from a dream. Bionics couldn't have children. It was impossible.
Except now they could. Bill's eyes washed over Matthew. It all made sense, really. Why he'd been created as a gorgeous man but with the equipment required to carry, birth, and nurse a child. Those small, perky breasts no doubt worked for milk production, but having a man's external features and identity probably helped keep predators at bay in a world that had likely reverted to the worst of sexism. Not that it had worked in Matthew's caseâthe bionic hunters had threatened to rape him anyway, not caring what was under the hood.
Bill didn't care either.
