In Jerusalem Yildiz was frustrated. No reports had come in about anybody landing anywhere. In fact, very few reports about anything came in. It was as quiet as a grave. It had been a week since she had arrived, and they must have landed by now.

She had spent hours with the scholar they had sent her. He had initially treated her as a stupid uneducated woman. She showed him the error of his ways, only a little forcefully, and after that they got on famously. She had learnt much. How the Templars were founded to help protect pilgrims and ended up charging graft for their services. How they built and maintained fortresses right up to the point they were kicked out of Syria.

She looked at a map that was pinned to the wall of the headquarters which had pins in to indicate the location of the agents. She scanned the coast from Jaffa to Haifa and her eye fell on what at first glance was a pin in an unoccupied stretch of coast somewhere called Atlit. The name rang a bell, and she searched her memory of what the old man had told her.

Atlit was the last Crusader stronghold, and its fortress was never taken until they left.

“Of course!”

“Madam?” a passing agent said.

“Get me the director.” The agent just looked at her. “Now, you dolt!”

Her tone brooked no delay and he moved quickly.

The director arrived post haste.

“Who has this station?” Yildiz said before he could ask what she wanted. He checked a list pinned beside the map.

“Samir Ali, he has just graduated.”

“Has he reported in?”

“Check with the desk if Samir Ali has checked in this week,” he ordered the agent who had hung around to see what was going on. He returned after five minutes.

“Samir Ali has not checked in and is overdue.”

“How does he communicate?” Yildiz said.

“By pigeon as they all do.”

Yildiz knew there was an extensive pigeon loft on the roof of the headquarters.

“Do you think –.”

“I think he is dead, and his pigeons roasted.”

“What -.”

“Have we received any reports from Haifa?” When he went to tell the agent to go to the desk again, she huffed and took the man by the arm.

The clerk at the desk shuffled tiny slips of paper that were incoming messages.

“Here is the one from Haifa,” he said and held it up to the light to read it. “Zayd reports all quiet but heard from a nomad that there was gunfire at Atlit.”

“Do you think this is connected?”

“Yes, of course it is. We need to get a squad to Atlit now!”
