Tip #7: Capturing Birds in Flight

If birds are among the most popular subjects to photograph, then capturing them in flight is among the most challenging aspects of bird photography. Progressing from filming relatively stationary birds to moving ones is only natural, however, and several techniques can be used to make it a little easier.

On a positive note, you’ll quickly recognize not all birds fly at breakneck speed. Some larger birds, such as egrets, herons, pelicans, and gulls, fly relatively slowly and thus are better subjects to start filming than some of the smaller species that fly much faster.

Learning to anticipate when a bird is about to take off or land is also important, so take advantage of the fact birds take off and land into the wind. To film waterfowl taking off, for example, focus on the bird as you slowly approach from downwind. The closer you get, the more nervous the bird will become, often fidgeting or swimming in slow circles, but always turning back into the wind. When it does go airborne, it will do so facing you.
