Chapter 18
âDarling!â Mr. Mosse greeted Riga at the door to the penthouse study, and kissed her forehead. He wore a black tuxedo, his raven black hair swept to one side, and Riga felt a pang of loss. Donovan looked damn good in tuxedos.
The raven head on the totem pole stared out of one eye, disapproving.
âMy assistant is here,â Mr. Mosse said loudly. âYou remember her?â
âOf course.â Riga edged into the book-lined study, her stride hampered by the long silver gown she wore. Low lights warmed the room, and firelight flickered across the oriental carpets, leather chairs and couches.
Donovanâs assistant stood at the desk, putting papers into a leather portfolio. She looked up, brushing a lock of dark hair from her face, and smiled. âHello, Miss Hayworth. Iâll just get out of your way.â
âNo need,â Riga said. âWas I interrupting something?â
âNot at all.â Donovanâs father helped Riga out of her short black cape. âWe just finished.â
His assistant bustled past. âHave a nice dinner.â
âThanks,â Riga said. Then, when the woman disappeared in the elevator: âYouâre really taking charge around here, arenât you?â
He strode to the bar, and poured a shot of brandy into a cut-crystal glass. âItâs the least I can do. Fortunately, I remember a thing or two about casino management, though I admit, times have changed. Drink?â
âSure. Donovan usually keeps some Zinfandel back there.â
âI never was much for wine.â He poured a glass, looking wistful. âThough my wife did enjoy pink champagne.â
She trailed her fingers along the back of the couch. âWhy have you stayed here, haunted the casino?â
âJust not ready to go, though it would be nice to see my wife again. I miss her.â He cleared his throat. âWe had pink champagne at our wedding. She insisted. Strong willed, like you.â
âItâs coming back in vogue now. Pink sparkling wine.â
He walked to her, glass extended. âEverything old is new again, eh?â
âSomething like that.â She took the glass and they toasted. âIâm sorry,â she said abruptly. âI was hard on you earlier. It wasnât fair.â
âYouâre protective of my son. Itâs sweet. Though I doubt heâd appreciate it â being protected, I mean. We like to think we can take care of ourselves.â
âYouâre right. And Donovan can take care of himself. Where is he, by the way?â
âHe went to see his wife. I mean the photographerâs wife.â
Her chest tightened. âThe photographerâs wife?â She put the glass down on an end table. âWhy?â she asked in an even voice.
âBecause Donovanâs coming to the party tonight. Looking like Cam, he thought it would be cruel to surprise her there, in front of everyone.â
Her head throbbed. âTo the⦠Why?!â
âBecause thereâs a lot at stake. He wonât hide from it.â
âBut⦠Whatâs he going to tell her? Heâs not going toââ
âNo, of course not. Sheâd never believe the truth. Iâm not sure what his plan is.â
âOh, God.â She picked up the wine, drank. Donovan was as pigheaded as⦠she was.
âYou look lovely, by the way. Itâs remarkable how much you look like her â Rita Hayworth, I mean.
