Chapter Twenty-Seven

Harrison wrestled the black bag over Liam’s head as Smith cuffed him. Their clothes were soaked, sticking to their bodies, as the lady of the house kept screaming at them. Harrison didn’t know where the darkroom was, but Smith led the way. The other guards followed close behind as they dragged Liam through the door.

Normally, whenever they moved Liam, they took him on a winding tour of the house, walking in and out of rooms to disorient him. It even disoriented Harrison sometimes, as they entered bedroom after bedroom, a giant room with a piano in it, a library, a second library… this place was insanely massive, big enough to house several families, but most of the furniture was covered in sheets to protect from dust, only removed if Madeline requested it.

This time Smith led them on a straight path, with a clear destination in mind.

The balaclava itched more than usual as it stuck to Harrison’s face. Smith led them down a long corridor and to a small room on the right. There were more mounted animal heads in there, things Harrison was surprised to see: a lion, a wolf, what looked like a stuffed eagle. It was like the owners of the house wanted everybody to know how powerful they were. They could even conquer nature.

Liam didn’t fight. They’d beaten him too badly. Harrison ignored the voice at the back of his head, whispering that they needed to stop. He tried not to think about what his dad would say, or his granddad, or his old Army buddies.

Finally they came to the darkroom. The light was turned low, an eerie mixture of yellow and red, and dozens of photos hung from wires criss-crossing from wall to wall.

They were of Liam. He was standing in a park, a wide grin on his face, as a German Shepherd sat obediently at his feet. He was walking out of the gym, a towel draped over his shoulders. He was sitting in a pub. He was standing at his bedroom window in his boxer shorts.

Harrison looked at Smith, but the man just shook his head. Then Madeline burst in behind them and Harrison stood up straight, pretending the photos didn’t bother him: that they weren’t yet another sign of how wrong this was.

Madeline was still in her swimming costume, and she held a short stick in her hand. She walked around to the front of Liam as she swatted it against her palm. “Remove the hood.”

Smith pulled it away. Liam stared at Madeline for a moment, and then noticed the photos. “What is this?”

“Research, silly,” Madeline said, giggling in that off-putting way of hers. She reminded Harrison of a girl he’d known at school, who’d once bullied one of the other girls so severely she’d had to move. “Well, that and I needed something to keep me going until the time was right.”

“The time…” Liam trailed off. “Until Emily was due to give birth. Until you knew you could use that to blackmail me.
