CHAPTER TWELVE
Memory Lane
âHey, beautiful!â
Kira opens her eyes to yelling. Only darkness and silence greets her, making her think it was another dream, except this one, a nightmare.
âOh, Modest Beauty!â A man sings from the street. âIâm here for you, beautiful, Modest Beauty of mine.â His tune is terrible enough to make anyone cringe.
Kira tosses the covers off and leaps out of bed. Sheâs surprised to find Rugerâs already at her window. âFriend of yours?â He whispers.
She shakes her head while peering through the curtain. Recognizing the Principal, Kira shudders. âI knew he was going to do this.â
âSo you do know him?â Thereâs enough sarcasm in Rugerâs tone to make her smile.
The Principal paces the street, wearing nothing but the same tattered jeans he wore the last time he was here. That was a year ago. âHeâs the Principal, sort like a warden of the Commons.â Kiraâs lips pucker. âHeâs had a thing for me, from long before everything changed. Occasionally, he drops by to harass me.â
âThat scrawny puke is a warden?â Ruger asks. His face rolled in perplexity.
Itâs been a long time since Kiraâs laughed. She tries to hold it in, but it feels too good.
Rugerâs lips curve into a smile. Even with his loss of color and unshaven face, Rugerâs still the most handsome man sheâs ever seen. Chest warm, she has to look away.
âI said, beautiful! Come out of there. Come to Quandii with me. This may be your last chance!â
She lights the lantern because she wants to be seen. Even though itâs unloaded, she picks up her rifle. âHeâs been trying to convince me to go to Quandii with him for years. He must really like me because he hasnât tattled on me yet.â She grimaces. âIn Auctairea, anarchy reigns, but if anyone were to hurt a Principal, it would be worse than killing the Mayor. Believe it or not, theyâre military, just in disguise.â She grabs the curtain. âDonât let him see you.â
Ruger steps aside.
Yanking the curtain back, she pulls the window open. Kira sets her scope right on him. âHey, death wish!â
The Principal throws his hands up. âCome on, Kira, why you always got to be like that? You know I can save you. The Commons, theyâre getting angry. Thereâs only so long I can keep them from taking what belongs to me.â
âIâll never belong to you.â
âArenât you tired of being all alone every night?â
The thought of the orgies theyâre rumored to have makes her nauseous, but Kira doesnât loosen her hold. Keeping the barrel of her rifle on him, she only wishes she had ammo. âNo.â
He grits his teeth and flaps his arms down, much like a child having a tantrum. âIâm leaving! The Commons, theyâll come here. If you donât come with me, right now, theyâll kill you!â
Kira knows the consequence for a soldier abandoning his post and doesnât believe him. âYou have five seconds to leave, or Iâll shoot. And this time, I wonât miss.â
Ruger peeps out of the window through a crack between curtains.
