YOU CAN LET GO OF MY BELT NOW

Tear’s blossomed in Mia’s eyes. “You moron,” she whispered. “He’ll murder you for this.”

I gently picked Mia up and cradled her in my arms, careful to support her head. “He probably would have killed me anyway. I don’t think Jack even likes me anymore.”

“They executed the others,” Mia whispered. “They made us watch.”

I ducked through the destroyed door and stepped back into the hall. So not all the folks who’d come with Saul to attack his Hatten distillery had died in the fighting. Those who’d surrendered had probably failed to think things through. Jack Griffyn, in general, was not a forgiving man.

“Can Saul walk?” I asked as I headed to the other cell. “Or did they torture him too?”

“He was screaming for hours,” Mia whispered. “We can’t leave him.”

“Only for you,” I agreed with a heavy sigh. I set Mia down beside Saul’s door, gently, then pushed and punched the door until it popped right off its hinges. It landed inside with a heavy clang.

“Wanker!” Saul shouted. “I’ll never tell you what you wish. You’re dead from the neck up.”

I frowned as I entered the brightly lit cell, staring at Saul’s slack and bloodied form. Didn’t he recognize me? Was he delirious from the torture? He did have an awful lot of blood on him.

Saul wore only a thin white shirt and boxers, both drenched in his own blood, revealing taut muscle. Jack had done a number on Saul before I arrived, but at least Saul was still alive. I ground my teeth as I imagined doing to Jack Griffyn what I’d done to his battle androids. I’d be rougher with Jack.

Saul’s gleaming silver eyepatch was missing, revealing an empty socket, but then, as I looked closer, I realized he didn’t just have one eye missing. There were two empty sockets now, and one was still bloody. My stomach churned as I realized how cruel Jack’s punishment had been.

Fortunately, I knew someone who could 3D print new eyes.

“It’s Grant,” I said as I entered Saul’s cell. “Sorry I didn’t get here earlier.”

Saul huffed. “Come to murder the man you betrayed? Get to it, then. I’m bored.”

I ground my teeth and snapped the manacles on Saul’s ankles, then wrists. “I’m here to rescue you, you wanker. I told you not to hit Griffyn’s distillery. Why couldn’t you listen, for once in your life?”

Saul scowled. “You betrayed us to Jack Griffyn, and I’ll kill you before telling you what you wish.”

I lifted Saul easily and balanced him on his bare and bloodied feet. “You can kill me all you want when we’re out of here. Now, can you walk?”

“Can you piss off?” Saul said. “I’m blind, you imbecile.”

I let him go and stepped away.

Saul stuck out his arms and wobbled, but he didn’t fall. Of course he could still walk. Saul was a former Special Tactics commando, and those folks didn’t break easily, even under torture.

“It’s good you can walk,” I said, “since I’ll apparently be carrying Mia out of here.
