Chapter X

Jacob’s insane proposal left me speechless, but even before I could formulate a response, he held up his hand and shook his head.

“I know what you’re thinking, but do not decide now. First, the two of you need rest and food.”

He stood and ushered us toward the door.

“Tonight you’ll stay as our guests and tomorrow we can talk further.”

Before either Leana or I could argue, Jacob guided us out of the library and shut the door. I was momentarily baffled by his sudden change in demeanor, and thrown off guard by the outlandish request.

Pose as an Ellevont? Until a few hours ago, I had been sure that they were Gods, and now I was to become one?

The very idea was foolish at best and madness at worst. No outcome I could fathom ended where me posing as a God could end with anything short of my death.

My thoughts were cut short when I felt a tug on my arm. Looking down, I saw Leana staring further down the hall and following her gaze, I noticed a young woman standing several yards away.

She was roughly my age, maybe a few years younger. Slightly taller than Leana, she was dressed in loose-fitting clothes that appeared to have been passed down from previous siblings, possibly even generations. Although worn, the clothes looked clean and well cared for, much like herself. Long, blonde hair spilled down her back, nearly reaching her waist, and her skin was very fair, as if she had spent her entire life hiding inside these dark and musky tunnels.

She eyed the two of us carefully in silence for several long minutes before seeming to reach a decision and with a curt head nod, motioned for us to follow.

Looking back at the library door and knowing Jacob had dismissed us for the evening, I shrugged and headed in the direction of the girl.

Before I made it more than three steps, Leana grabbed my arm.

“Can we trust them?”

I fought back a smile at the absurdity of her statement. Besides the fact that seeking out the “Last Man” had been her idea and dream only days before, she constantly reminded me that she didn’t trust me, often threatening to kill me. Now faced with these bizarre people, I was suddenly a confidant.

I fought back a snarky retort and nodded.

“For now. Besides, I don’t think we have much choice.”

Displeased, but content with my answer, Leana nodded, and the two of us let the blonde girl guide us further into what was beginning to feel like a bear’s den.

Something about the place set me on edge and although Jacob hadn’t given us a reason not to trust him, I wasn’t fool enough to assume everyone who lived here would follow his lead. The hairs on the back of my neck had been on end since awaking here, and I assumed it would be some time for that feeling to pass. After so many years in the wilderness, I felt that I had a pretty sensitive intuition for danger, and this was no exception.
