CHAPTER

SEVEN

The taxi dropped Kasia and me at the end of the lane. We ran towards the orphanage, our breath rising like puffs of vapor and the gravel crunching beneath our feet. The lights were on and people were stirring. We sneaked through a back entrance near the infirmary and stored our coats in a closet in case we ran into anyone. Kasia ran to check on the littles and I went straight to the director’s office. He’s on our side, I told myself. I can tell him anything.

Anything- anything whatever; something, no matter what.

The door was ajar, and I heard a one-sided conversation. He must be on the phone.

“I’ll let you know when she gets here...yes, I understand…...we are all concerned. Thank you. Goodbye.” Click. I poked my head in.

“Director Josef?”

“Adelina, I have been waiting for you. Come in and shut the door. Panie Piotr just called. He is worried about you and Kasia.”

He handed me a mug of coffee and pointed to a chair.

“I think I’m up to speed except for the last hour. Fill me in. What happened at the taxi station?”

I filled in him on Sabilia’s plan to follow Ryszard.

“Good. Good. I’m glad you are safe. I’m glad you know everything. We are all on board. I hated deceiving you. We didn’t know if Cecylia was involved or not. We had to wait and see. I’m so sorry about Daria. We are going to do everything we can to find her.”

“Thanks,” I said. I sipped the coffee. Suddenly I felt guilty for ever doubting him.

“No time for that now,” he said, sensing my mood. “You’ve got some serious acting ahead of you today. All the world’s a stage. Are you ready?”

And all the men and women merely players;

They have their exits and their entrances;

And one man in his time plays many parts,

I was ready to play mine.

“What’s on the agenda?” I said, sitting up straighter.

“Marge and Jim are coming at ten to take you and Cecylia out. You need to play it up. Her ego is her weakness. Let her steal the show and see what you find out.”

A light knock sounded, and the door opened about five inches.

“Did I hear my name?” Cecylia stuck her golden head in the doorway.

“Yes, Cecylia, come in. Marge and Jim asked to take you girls out for some fun today. Adelina thought you might want to choose something.”

“Shopping! In Piotrkow! Oh,” she paused, “Kasia says she needs help with the littles.”

“Sure,” I said, anxious to get out of there. How was I going to do all this today? I stood up and set my mug down. “See you in a bit,” and I was out the door, running.

“I’ll pick out your clothes,” she yelled after me.

Ten o’clock found me in Cecylia’s clothes and make-up, waiting in the lobby. It was worth the price of being dolled up to hear Cecylia prattle on. Keep talking, girl. That’s when she would slip. When I got too angry with her, I just imagined her being shaken like a rag doll when Scary Man choked her.
