Dear Babe,
Just a note to let you know that all is well and Pappy is still intact. Today I read a short note in the June 19th Time that you might enjoy, rather short, but it tells more than I am able to. Actually I read it several days ago but I am quite sure that that is the issue.
The other day I almost came across Frank Greer. I met his boss in the big city. The report was that he had hurt his ears the evening before when a demolition charge intended for the krauts backfired.
You probably are aware of our activities through the press. As you no doubt know, officers of the grade of colonel and above may not be mentioned by name so you should hear little directly of me. Time is doing an article on Matt [Ridgway] that is going to place him on the cover, it should be interesting; it is due out in the next several weeks, perhaps by the time you receive this letter.
Regarding ear troubles, I am having some of my own. Ever since Sicily I have not been getting much registration on my right ear, not that it was much good before Sicily but it was better. Anyway, as it works out it is a blessing because it enables me to sleep through rather heavy shelling without hearing it (the ground bounces a bit) provided I sleep with the poorer ear uppermost. After a bit, however, I become concerned because I might miss the warning whistle of a close one and not get into my hole in time so I remain awake just in case. It poses quite a problem, whether to sleep and hear little or keep awake and keep alive. The solution is to always sleep in a deep hole but I have come to dislike holes for sleeping. This must sound silly, it is, but it is what concerns people up here, how to keep alive.
Love to everyone,
Pappy
