Emotion

Something like a cold breath hit him and Ful sat straight up in the bed. It took him a moment and closing his eyes again to make the room stop spinning. He groaned once and reopened his eyes to find he was in a small chamber with nothing more than a bed, a toilet sized to the specifications of a Goruffian, and a small sink. Beyond that was a force barrier that cut him off from the rest of the room, which housed at least four more units just like his. The force barrier glowed a light red. He’d heard about these, but never seen one in person. The Coalition had begun using them to control unruly prisoners. Unlike the normal blue force barriers he was used to, this one would shock you and could even incapacitate you if you tried pushing up against it long enough.

“Well, at least they’re taking me seriously,” Ful said. Then he remembered. He ran his hands down his ears, feeling for any blood and finding none. “Hello, helloooo,” he said, the words coming through crystal clear. On the bridge he’d heard one loud pop and everything had gone silent. He could see people trying to talk to him or motioning, but he hadn’t been able to hear a thing. They’d taken him to another part of the station and the next thing he knew, he was lying on a bio bed.

His heart rate picked up. How long ago had that been? His next dose of medication had been due only about twelve hours after they arrived at Trykelta. What if he’d been here longer than that? What if he missed another dose? It could be back to his old ways and if the Coalition saw him like that, he was sure they wouldn’t bother with force barriers. They’d take care of the situation permanently.

The doors on the other side of the barrier opened and an older human woman in a white coat entered. “Oh good, you’re awake,” she said. “I was hoping those narcs would wear off before I left my shift.”

“What did you give me?” Ful asked.

“The usual,” she replied. “Doxitroban, so we could operate on your ears.” Ful felt them again. He couldn’t tell if there was any difference. “Don’t worry,” the human said. “We managed to restore your hearing one hundred percent. But I’d suggest you keep earplugs with you. Some people don’t understand how fragile your hearing is.”

“I didn’t expect to get hit with a piercer,” Ful replied.

The human’s face fell a little. “Yes. Well. I’ve tried telling them not to use such extreme techniques on people, but they don’t want to listen. It’s all Clements’ fault.”

“Who?” Ful asked.

“Nevermind. I’m just checking your vitals to make sure you’re safe to transport tomorrow.”

Ful stared at the woman. “Transport where?”

“Wherever it is they plan on taking you,” she replied. “You’ve been branded a terrorist, so I don’t think you’ll be seeing a place like this again for a long time.” She looked over some information on the holo screen in front of her.
