Figure 6.3 The Strength of Weak Ties
Weak ties allow us to get access to people and information that we would otherwise not have access to. Chances are the people in our direct network (strong ties) have access to the same people and information that we do, so they can't always be as helpful. A weak tie acts as a bridge, which means new ideas, new information, new solutions, and new knowledge and expertise. Managers traditionally relied on decision making from their direct network (their strong ties), whereas the weak ties become extremely important in the future of work.
Collective intelligence can be used for anything ranging from ideas to cutting costs, the identification of new opportunities or marketing, or simple things such as getting help on a problem or asking a question. The point is to rely on the intelligence of many instead of the intelligence of a few.
Game maker Electronic Arts (EA) uses the wisdom of employees to help accurately predict which games will be more successful so it knows where to allocate dollars. Henkel, the global manufacturing company of chemical products, uses collective intelligence to improve sales forecasts (which it did by 22 percent). Small and large organizations around the world are realizing the value of tapping into the wisdom of their employees to help solve problems and make decisions.
Today, managers cannot believe in hoarding information but in sharing information and collective intelligence. Managers need to make sure that the employees can connect to each other and to the information they need to get their jobs done, anytime, anywhere, and on any device. Managers now rely on employees to help make decisions instead of isolating them from this process.
