But why stop at software? With its brainpower, financial might, and engineering resources, nothing was hindering Google from producing innovative hardware to run on its own software platforms. After all, the device market seems to be where huge potential profits are, as Apple has demonstrated with iPod, iPhone, and iPad, whereas Google gives its software and operating systems away for free. Thus, the company now offers Nexus smartphones and tablets, Chromebook laptops, Chromebox desktop PCs, the Chromecast media streaming adapter, Google TV (a smart TV interface), and of course Google Glass—the headgear with optical display and integrated camera. Sergey Brin’s Google X research group is also currently testing a “smart contact lens,” designed to help diabetes patients by monitoring the glucose level in their tears. And with the acquisition of Nest Labs, the startup company that gave us learning thermostats and smoke detectors, Google has moved into the market for home automation appliances and the Internet of Things.
