The dragon was easily three stories tall, even though he stood crouched on his hind legs, with a long, spike-lined tailed curling around those folded back legs. His body was thick, muscular, covered in mostly purple scales with a wash of yellow along his sides and over his stomach. The scales caught the weak winter sunlight, turning the dragon into a sparkling spot of unreality.

Myra blinked as a creature that could swallow her whole and barely notice lowered his huge head to her, bending his long neck nearly in half to get his raised snout down on her level. Though the dragon kept his mouth closed, she was acutely aware that there were a lot of teeth inside that mouth.

Turning to one side, the dragon stared at her with one eye, transparent inner lids whisked over the huge, purplish-blue iris, making it look like his eye shimmered. That faint purple glow over blue… That reminded her so sharply of Christopher she gasped.

“So,” she whispered, wondering if his hearing like this was as good as when he was in his human form. “This is you as a dragon, huh?”

A small head nod and a little puff of smoke from his raised nostrils. She expected that smoke to smell vaguely of sulfur, a hint of brimstone to remind gawkers of the fire that could escape that mouth.

Except, he didn’t smell like sulfur. Or even a reptile. There was a bit of Christopher there, surprisingly. But also…

“Does he smell like sugar cookies to you?” Myra asked Issa.

Issa gave her a look. A frown. Then a slow smile. “No. He doesn’t. First time seeing his dragon form?”

Myra nodded, curious but too awed to ask why Issa was smiling at her. Most of her attention was still on the dragon.

A sound, in the distance, like the roar Christopher had released but louder, deeper, and distinctly more angry sounding, echoed across the buildings. Myra glanced toward that sound. Coming from the general direction of the warehouse.

That was bad.

“How do we travel this way?” she asked Christopher, panic making her less worried about the dragon in front of her who did not want to eat her because the dragon on its way just might.

He stretched out both his huge front hands. Each finger was thicker than her entire body and tipped with long, sharp talons like a ginormous hawk. Without hesitating, Issa climbed up onto one of those giant hands, and Chrisopher gently closed his dragon fingers around the woman, cradling her in his grip as she wrapped her arms around the digit that looked most like a thumb.

Myra looked at the hand stretched out to her. Then the eye focused on her. The little wink of the inner lids. Okay. So. He intended on carrying them this way. Took that whole saying of having someone in the palm of your hand a little literally, but she could do this.

Her heartbeat pounding, the rush of fear sent a spike of adrenaline into her blood. And the charge sent another bolt of excitement hot on its heels.
