CHAPTER 35
8:30 A.M. TUESDAY
Daniel reached for a slice of Granâs banana nut bread, doing his best to appear normal. Rain beat steadily on the roof, the sky a mass of angry clouds.
âWhy are you spending your vacation days with a couple of old people?â Gran said. âWhy not go hunting or catch a plane to Hawaii?â
He wished it were all that simple. âSoon, Gran.â He pulled up a pic of Trey Messner taken from the bakeryâs security camera footage and showed it to her. âNot exactly a pretty sight, but do you recognize this man?â
She shook her head.
He scrolled to a second picture of him taken in Miami. This one had been computer treated with gray woven in dark-brown hair to resemble the description of the salesman whoâd swindled Silver Hospitality guests.
âI know the jerk. Heâs the salesman from Silver Hospitality.â
Bingo.
âLet me take a look.â Gramps was in a good place this morning. He pointed to the man. âSure, itâs Russell Jergon, the dirty, no-good scoundrel who took our money.â
âAre you taking this to Silver Hospitality to confirm?â Gran said.
âSomeone will. Iâm on vacation.â
âRight. An arrest would make us all feel better,â she said.
âNot exactly. The manâs dead.â
âI hope it was done by a senior citizen,â Gramps said.
âEarl! Shame on you.â
Gramps waved her away. âSaved taxpayer money to have him housed and executed.â
âIs this from the man who opposes the death penalty?â Gran said.
âAbby girl, some no-goods canât be rehabilitated.â
Daniel had heard this discussion before, and heâd better stop it now. âThe man chased Laurel, fired at her, and she shot him. Drove the same truck that fired at us. Both times stolen license plates were used.â
Gramps held up a finger. âYou ought to hold on to her. Never know when you might need an extra gun.â
âYou have a point.â Daniel had no desire to discuss Laurel when everything was on hold until the scammers were arrested.
âI received a card in the mail yesterday,â Gran said.
âYou didnât tell me.â Gramps swallowed half a piece of banana bread.
âWhatâs the occasion?â
Gran disappeared and returned a few moments later. She placed the card before him, her fingers shaking. âMaybe your friends at the FBI can analyze this.â
Daniel opened the thinking-of-you card and read the message. He masked the fear swirling through him with a calm demeanor. âThose guys donât give up.â
âApparently not,â she said.
Gramps took the card. âSniveling coward! Just let him come near my Abby.â
Daniel touched his arm. âGood men are guarding the house. Youâre safe. We both know Gran is a better shot than we are.â He focused on her. âCan I take this to the FBI?â
âSure. I wanted to burn it but thought better of it.â She lifted her stubborn chin. âDonât think I wonât unload on whoeverâs doing this.â
âPromise me you wonât go anywhere. Not even with a bodyguard.â
âStaying here is boring,â Gran said. âI canât experience the world.â
âPlease. You asked my help in this.â
âAll right. You have my word.â
