By August 1942 Max was clearly into the rhythm of fieldwork. He was based in Mongu and during the week would work either at his Katongo camp or at the Lozi capital and then spend weekends in Mongu with newly arrived Mary and their infant son. He was now doing “research Schapera style” on politics and law by asking formal questions and noting the answers, and he hoped to remain in the field until December (MG to MF, August 15, 1942, CUFP). A few months later Mary returned to Livingstone, and Max’s letter responding to her bewailing her unpopularity in Mongu perhaps best summarized the situation:

It is the kind of place where something was bound to crop up like that. No one is really liked there. The V[aux]s are disliked as being stingy and ungenerous—for instance, when Jackson went Brian would not allow Irene to ask them to separate their milk, and you know how friendly they are. The only person I have never heard a bad word against are the Balmes, except from GR. It is an unhappy place, full of mischief makers, and if it were not one lie it would be another. (December 6, 1942)
