An hour and a half later, they landed.

Ranger felt Simmy’s relief as they taxied down the runway. For the entire flight, she’d squeezed his hand. He’d watched her. Half the time, she’d looked terrified. The other half, she’d looked fascinated.

The mountains were beautiful, as were the glaciers, lakes, and ice fields.

Beautiful but dangerous.

Like Vivian.

His throat tightened at the thought of her.

He’d heard rumors Vivian might be in Alaska. But he’d suspected she was up north, which was one of the reasons he’d begun to work at Gates of the Arctic. In his spare time, he’d searched for her.

She needed to pay for the trauma she’d put their daughter through. For betraying him.

Ranger didn’t know what he’d do when he found Vivian. He prayed for the Lord’s wisdom and that he didn’t do something he’d regret.

But Vivian wouldn’t get away with what she’d done. Ranger would make sure of that.

He’d borrowed Nathaniel’s satellite phone and made a few calls before the flight. He knew in order to successfully complete his mission, he couldn’t do it by himself.

He had no doubt Vivian had hired security agents to watch out for her.

Ranger could not blow this operation. He had to find Vivian and then, in return, find Anastasia.

He and Simmy stepped off the plane at the tiny airport.

The sun shone down on them as they paused near the steps. The place was simple with several aluminum-sided hangars scattered around the runway.

Blaze motioned for them to follow him into a hangar.

The flight had already been paid for—Nathaniel had covered the cost, although Ranger promised to pay him back once this was over.

The visit in the hangar was for another reason.

Ranger was expecting company. He glanced at his watch.

The others should be here at any time.

The three of them stepped inside the space, which was probably big enough for a couple of planes. There was a desk, a large toolbox, and some other equipment.

“Make yourselves comfortable,” Blaze told them. “I’m meeting a friend for lunch while I’m here in town, but I’ll be back in an hour. You need anything?”

Ranger shook his head. “We’re good.”

“Perfect. Thank you for your business.”

As soon as Blaze walked away, Ranger turned to Simmy and pulled her into his arms. “Thank you for being here with me.”

A soft smile tugged at her lips as she gazed up at him. “I could say the same for you. At least being here has thrown Knave off my trail.”

“Knave?” It was the first time she’d said his name.

She nodded into his chest. “That was what all his guys called him, and it seems more fitting than his given name, which is pretty innocuous.”

“It sounds like Knave is a piece of work.”

“That may be the understatement of the year.” Her voice quivered. “This is what I have feared would happen for many, many years.”

Ranger stroked her back. “You don’t have to be afraid. I’m here with you.”

Simmy’s body melted into his. “I know you’ll do everything in your power to protect me. But I also know Knave will do everything in his power to hurt me.
