An hour and a half later, they landed.
Ranger felt Simmyâs relief as they taxied down the runway. For the entire flight, sheâd squeezed his hand. Heâd watched her. Half the time, sheâd looked terrified. The other half, sheâd looked fascinated.
The mountains were beautiful, as were the glaciers, lakes, and ice fields.
Beautiful but dangerous.
Like Vivian.
His throat tightened at the thought of her.
Heâd heard rumors Vivian might be in Alaska. But heâd suspected she was up north, which was one of the reasons heâd begun to work at Gates of the Arctic. In his spare time, heâd searched for her.
She needed to pay for the trauma sheâd put their daughter through. For betraying him.
Ranger didnât know what heâd do when he found Vivian. He prayed for the Lordâs wisdom and that he didnât do something heâd regret.
But Vivian wouldnât get away with what sheâd done. Ranger would make sure of that.
Heâd borrowed Nathanielâs satellite phone and made a few calls before the flight. He knew in order to successfully complete his mission, he couldnât do it by himself.
He had no doubt Vivian had hired security agents to watch out for her.
Ranger could not blow this operation. He had to find Vivian and then, in return, find Anastasia.
He and Simmy stepped off the plane at the tiny airport.
The sun shone down on them as they paused near the steps. The place was simple with several aluminum-sided hangars scattered around the runway.
Blaze motioned for them to follow him into a hangar.
The flight had already been paid forâNathaniel had covered the cost, although Ranger promised to pay him back once this was over.
The visit in the hangar was for another reason.
Ranger was expecting company. He glanced at his watch.
The others should be here at any time.
The three of them stepped inside the space, which was probably big enough for a couple of planes. There was a desk, a large toolbox, and some other equipment.
âMake yourselves comfortable,â Blaze told them. âIâm meeting a friend for lunch while Iâm here in town, but Iâll be back in an hour. You need anything?â
Ranger shook his head. âWeâre good.â
âPerfect. Thank you for your business.â
As soon as Blaze walked away, Ranger turned to Simmy and pulled her into his arms. âThank you for being here with me.â
A soft smile tugged at her lips as she gazed up at him. âI could say the same for you. At least being here has thrown Knave off my trail.â
âKnave?â It was the first time sheâd said his name.
She nodded into his chest. âThat was what all his guys called him, and it seems more fitting than his given name, which is pretty innocuous.â
âIt sounds like Knave is a piece of work.â
âThat may be the understatement of the year.â Her voice quivered. âThis is what I have feared would happen for many, many years.â
Ranger stroked her back. âYou donât have to be afraid. Iâm here with you.â
Simmyâs body melted into his. âI know youâll do everything in your power to protect me. But I also know Knave will do everything in his power to hurt me.
