Questions for Reflection:
Where have I allowed religion to hold me back because of my "sin"?
Ask the Father to remind you that Jesus is "the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world".
Where have I felt like I owe something for my "sin"?
Ask the Father to comfort you and remind you that Jesus has "paid double".
Where can I repent (change my thinking about God)?
Ask the Father to give you a bigger vision of his love and grace for you—and then repent of the smaller vision!

I and My Father Are One
Let's pretend for a moment that we could create some sort of equation out of various texts. Now, this could easily derail into a complete train wreck of proof texts and poorly exegeted passages. In fact, the chapter was so poorly written the first time, I nearly cut it completely. But I think we can have a little fun here. If we could create this equation, it would look something like this:
(x+y)=z - Let's solve the equation using a few things Jesus said during his ministry.
x = "I and my Father are one " 1
y = "the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner". 2
Thus, (x+y)=z reads like this: if Jesus and the Father are one, and everything Jesus does is what the Father would do, then everything Jesus did is what the Father would have done. In this first equation, z=Jesus is exactly like God, or " Jesus exegetes (reveals) Papa". 3 I know this may sound unnecessarily simple—or if you're like my wife, tediously boring—but stick with me. We probably ought to read Jesus in a new light—that being, if He did it, it's what the Father likely would've done in that particular situation. At least if Jesus is telling the truth anyways. Let's apply this and see what we learn.
"When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, "Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?" She said, "No one, Lord." And Jesus said to her, "Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more." 4
Whether this passage was added in later years by a scribe notwithstanding, what we can grab here is that if Jesus didn't condemn this woman—the Father didn't condemn her either. Pretty simple right? The one who claimed to be one with the Father in two verses—on a single sentence not only releases this woman from condemnation, but also restores her identity. The adultery in which she was caught had become her identity; or in other words, to the religious leaders, she was now an adulteress . No longer was she a woman , but now something lower than a mere woman; she was an adulteress. This is much like the church today. We label people whatever label we have chosen to be our particular hot button.
