Colour and abstracts

It’s not just shape and form that can create an abstract. Looking closely at colours and patterns of colours will help too. An abstract can lurk anywhere within a colourful vista – markets are great examples of this, as the image of colourful shoes below shows. Perhaps an easier example to find would be a selection of ties hanging on a shop rail. Remember that colour is as important to the look of an abstract as the form of the subjects themselves.

Regular patterns can help form abstracts, as can colour, but here both combine – in rows of new shoes – to produce a great abstract image with strong form. Note the use of an unorthodox angle: the shoes have been photographed to exaggerate the perspective of the racks in which they lie. A flat ‘straight on’ shot might also work, but not as effectively as this.
