CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Martech Laboratories

12001 W. Pearl Blvd

Jackson, Mississippi

After checking into a hotel in the middle of the night, they slept late into the day. Since it seemed that the demon’s method of operation or M.O. was to wait until after dark and hit somewhere away from the research labs, they figured they had some time for rest.

At the end of the day, Jake, Ellie, and Pam drove to the Martech Lab building located in one of the industrial areas of Jackson. It was a large multi-story building with large exterior glass panels. They watched as the employees left work for the day.

“How are we going to know where these demons were going to strike? We’re not even sure when?” asked Pam.

Jake glanced into the back seat where she sat. “If we’re right, they’re on some type of schedule, and they seem to be hitting as quickly as possible.”

“Okay, but how do we know where they’re going to hit here in Jackson?” asked Pam.

They were all silent for a moment.

“We could follow several of them around and see where they go?’ suggested Ellie.

Jake shook his head. “That would take too long.”

“They seem to hit places where several of them gather. Besides attacking the two leaders of the company, the attack sites were bars and gyms,” Ellie interjected.

“But how do we know where most of them go?”

They sat in silence once again watching the employees file out of the building. A convenience store sat at the end of the block from the building and many of the employees stopped off there before heading elsewhere.

“Pull into the convenience store. I have an idea,” said Pam.

Jake pulled into a parking space in front of the store. Pam climbed out of the suburban and went inside. They watched as she bought a soda and talked to a couple of young male employees. The two men seemed to be more than happy to talk to the attractive blonde woman. After a few minutes she came back to the suburban.

“What was that all about?” asked Jake.

Pam smiled brightly. “I simply told the two men that I was new to the lab and wanted to know where they went for some fun after work. They were more than happy to tell me where most of the employees hang out.”

“And?”

“They all go to a place called Lenny’s Sports Grill. It’s across town.”

They drove over to the sport’s bar and grill and found the parking lot was full.

“This must be the place,” said Pam.

“So, what now?” asked Ellie.

“We wait,” explained Jake.

“What about the back door? We can go watch the back.”

“No. It’s too dangerous.”

“But we can help watch out for them. Three sets of eyes are better than one.”

Jake frowned. Not again. “Are we going to have to argue about this every time?”

“No,” said Ellie. “You can stay here, and we’ll just drive around back and watch.”

Jake frowned. “I know. And Roscoe can protect you.” He didn’t like it, but it did make sense. “Okay, go around back and park. Don’t do anything but watch, and I’ll call you in a few minutes.
