Chapter 28

“Sarah, they have taken every picture, run every test, inserted dye, poked and prodded every nerve. They simply can’t find anything wrong with Tommy’s arm or shoulder. Yet, he still has no muscle control at all. He can feel it and can feel touch, but it just hangs there limp, like it is dead.” Emma sat at the table with a cup of untouched coffee in front of her. “I don’t know how to help them. Joe and Tommy are beside themselves.”

“Emma, just be there for them, like we all are. Sometimes just being in the room is the best we can do. Tommy will be fine, no matter what. His plans may have to change, but that kid is too rock-solid to let anything stand between him and a bright future.”

Emma looked away from her coffee and at Sarah. “How’s David? We need him. Knight or not, we need the confidence his leadership brings.”

Sarah looked away from Emma as she spoke. “He’s . . .”

“Fine! He is just fine.” David walked into the kitchen and toward the coffee with a mug in hand. “Sure, he has lost all his ability to feel demons, can barely walk a flight of stairs without tripping, and doesn’t seem to have the strength to pick up his sword; but, hey, he is just fine.”

“David, I . . .”

“Don’t waste your breath. None of it really matters, does it? Tommy needed me, and I couldn’t be there for him. Who’s next? Sarah? You Emma? Maybe little Emmy? Whose life is God gonna let Satan destroy next?”

David left with his coffee, back to his office. He shut the door as he entered. Duke tried to follow, but had to settle for lying next to the door on the outside.

Sarah gave Emma a weak smile. “He is fine. I know it even if he doesn’t know it yet. I know that man far better than he knows himself, and there is no one I would want by my side in this ordeal more than him. He’s a little lost right now, but he will find his way.”

“I hope so, Sarah. I really hope so.” Emma picked up her coffee and took a sip.

“Emma, look at me. If I had to choose between Michael and a legion of his best battle angels to protect me, or that man in there, there is no choice. David will get my vote every single time. I know his heart, and I know it will not fail us. I will never doubt that man. No matter what, I will stand by him. Absolutely, no matter what.”

“I don’t doubt that for a second. However, I truly hope that Satan doesn’t test that loyalty. Even beating Satan will take a toll.”

“He will, you know. Satan will test it.” Saraphiss came hobbling into the room. The pain was still apparent on his face, but he moved better each day. “Satan will look for any weakness, any chance of weakness, and then exploit it.” Saraphiss sat down.
