ANOTHER CRIME SCENE INSPECTION
Pauline and Mike had barely begun their planning when there was a thump on the door that made Pauline jump. It was followed by continued pounding and Joâs voice shouting for Mike.
Mike rose and walked to the door. He opened it and said, âWhat?â
âSheâs killed another one,â Jo cried, pointing at Pauline through the gap in the door.
âWhat are you talking about?â Pauline asked, puzzled at this new accusation.
âBryan is dead,â Jo cried. âKilled by the tea in the teapot you poisoned.â
âDead?â Mike asked, looking around at Pauline.
âHe was fine when we left the room,â Pauline replied. âAnd I certainly didnât poison any tea.â
âWe saw you,â Jo said. âYou were at the teapot, then decided on coffee. You knew Bryan drank tea, though you pretended you didnât.â
âHow would I know that?â Pauline asked angrily. She knew she was letting Joâs constant accusations get to her but couldnât stop it.
âYou must have seen him yesterday,â Jo said. âHe drank tea then.â
âI saw nothing of the sort,â Pauline said. âAnyway, why would I kill Bryan? Iâve never met him until this weekend.â
âSo, you say,â Jo began, but Mike interjected.
âStop it, both of you.â He turned to Pauline. âWeâll return to the breakfast room and see what this is about.â
Bryan was sitting in a chair at the table with his back to them as they entered the room. To Pauline, he looked alive. He wasnât moving but he wasnât slumped over the table or slouching sideways, ready to fall.
She walked to his side. He was dead. There was no question. His eyes were open but drying and lifeless. She reached to touch him, and the others shouted at her to stop.
âThen tell me, is his body limp or stiff?â Pauline said.
âStiff,â Gilles said. âItâs like heâs frozen in place.â
Pauline frowned. She knew she recognized the signs but just for the moment, the name of the poison wouldnât come to her.
âWhy has he a napkin between his fingers?â
âHe got jabbed by the breadbasket,â Tom said, who seemed to be wavering between horror and laughter.
Pauline walked to the counter and studied the basket without touching it. As Tom had suggested, a fine sliver of metalwork had come loose and stuck out dangerously.
She turned back to the group. âHave you checked for a pulse?â she asked.
âOf course, we have,â Saul said. âDo you think weâre all stupid or incapable?â
âNo,â Pauline said, âbut people often donât want to touch others without permission.â
âYou know heâs dead,â Saul said. âYou killed him.â
âI didnât know Bryan until we met on Friday night,â Pauline replied. âHow would I know to bring poison to kill him?â
âYour plan is to kill all of us,â Jo said. âBryan was just next because he drank tea.â
âThis is ludicrous,â Pauline said.
Then Mike intervened. âNo more arguments,â he said. âWe need to decide what to do with Bryanâs body. He canât stay here like this.â
âAs we did with Arnie,â Pauline said. âYou photograph the scene from every direction. In this case, we have to move him to his room because, youâre right, he canât stay here.
