“He’s going to hate me.”

“You don’t know that. You did what you thought was right at the time.”

“You should take him back. Please. That’ll fix it. Take him back but not to where he was, only when. You can take him home or something, so he wasn’t still captive.”

Dr. Lachele smiled patronizingly at her. She was mumbling and rambling, but they were all safe and had popped back into the future in her almost-empty apartment. “I can’t. Not now anyway. He’s not conscious. I probably shouldn’t have brought him here, truth be told, but he was in danger. He’s not anymore.”

“But we’ve ripped him from his life. Everything he knows. He’s going to be so confused.”

“I’m sure he’ll get over it. I mean, I wouldn’t doubt if he enjoys getting a glimpse of the future.”

“Glimpse?” Emma stood from her place crouching at the side of her bed where she’d laid Casper.

Dr. Lachele nodded. “You know where to find me. You got your wish; he can have one too.” She shrugged. “Seems only fair seeing as how I just hurtled him more than a hundred years into the future.”

“So you’ll send him back if he wants to go?” The pit in her stomach was starting to stir. Hope was growing inside her.

Dr. Lachele nodded and her purple-hair bobbed. “I will, but only if he asks me to send him back, which means you’re going to have to tell him the truth.”

Emma tried to look contrite but didn’t quite pull it off.

“It’s that obvious, is it?”

She nodded and held her hands up. “Not up to me. You decide how you want to live your life. I just think he should know the facts before he decides what to do with his.”

Emma agreed. She circled the bed and went to where the older woman was standing by the door. “Thank you.”

Lachele smiled.

“You’re sure Beth is safe?”

Lachele’s smile brightened. “You are, aren’t you?”

Emma thought about that for a moment. Was she? Physically, yes but emotionally, not so much. The man she loved was lying on her bed with no idea how far he’d come and what he was going to wake up to. That of course all depended on if he woke up. As if her thoughts had prodded him, Casper began to stir. Emma looked back to Lachele. “I’ll see you at Book Club next week?” she asked.

Lachele nodded and opened the door. “Just remember, dear, what’s meant to be will be.”
